    The Korean Information Center holds the Comprehensive Art Exhibition (Korean Information Center, Seoul, January 22-February 10). A total of eighteen groups participate in this exhibition, including Mokwoohoe, Paek Yang Painting Association, and the Korean Calligraphers Association. Kang Kukjin showcases in this exhibition his technology work Visual Sense I,II.

    Choi Minshik publishes Korea’s first photography monograph Ingan [Human] with Dong-A Ilbo newspaper company.

    The Second Korean Painting Society Exhibition (Seoul Press Center, March 28-April 3) is held. The exhibition features sixteen artists including Kang Youngbong, Kim Kumchul, Kim Wonse, Song Youngbang, Shin Youngsang, Lee Kyusun, Lee Yeongja, Chang Sangeui, Jeong Sunil, Jang Chihwan , Jeong Geumhui, Chung Takyoung, Jeong Yeongjo, Jeong Sangwon, Choi Jongin and Hong Junghee.

    The First Painting ’68  Exhibition (Seoul Press Center, March 21-27) is held. Formed by Kwak Hoon, Kim Kulim, Kim Tchahsup, Park Heeja, Yu Bukang, Li Jagyong, Cha Myeonghui, Ha Dongchul, Han Gisu, and others, Painting ’68 demonstrates the influence of the newest art trends such as pop art, op art, and kinetic art. 

    The Fifth Engagement Exhibition (Shingegae Gallery, Seoul, March 24-31) is held. The exhibition features seventeen artists including Kim Suhbohng, Kim Tai, Park Gwangho, Park Geunja, Shim Chookcha, Ahn Jae-hu, Oh Chunryong, Lee Manik, Lee Yonghwan, Choi Kyunghan, Pil Jugwang, and Hwang Yongyop.

    The unveiling ceremony of the Statue of Admiral Yi Sun-sin created by Kim Sechoong is held in Gwanghwamun Square. The Korean government organizes the Committee for the Construction of Statues of Patriotic Ancestors from 1968 to 1972 and promotes the erection of statues.

    The Union of Korean Young Artists holds the event A Night of Contemporary Art and Happenings (Music Hall C’est Si Bon, Seoul, May 2). The Union is the young artists’ group that hosted the Union Exhibition of Korean Young Artists in 1967. Chung Chanseung introduces the trends of artworks shown at overseas biennials, and Oh Kwang-su gives a lecture on action painting and happenings.

    Sinjeon Group members Kang Kukjin, Jung Kangja, and Chung Chanseung hold the Fourth Contemporary Art Seminar, “Environmental Art and Collective Reality,” and perform the happening Transparent Balloon and Nude (Music Hall C’est Si Bon, May 20).

    The Contemporary Korean Painting exhibition (The National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo, July 19–September 1) is held in Tokyo. This is the first official cultural exchange event since the normalization of diplomatic relations between Korea and Japan in 1965. Selected by critics Yu Jun-sang, Lee Kyungsung, Lee Yil, Lim Young-Bang, and Choi Soonwoo, the following artists participate: Kwon Okyon, Quac Insik, Kim Sangyu, Kim Youngjoo, Kim Chonghak, Kim Foon, Nam Kwan, Park Seobo, Byun Chongha, Yoo Kangyul, Yoo Youngkuk, Youn Myeungro, Rhee Seundja, Lee Seduk, Lee Soojai, Lee Ufan, Chun Sungwoo, Chung Changsup, Choi Youngrim, and Ha Chonghyun. Lee Ufan is officially introduced to the Korean art world for the first time through this exhibition.

    The First Korea Trade Fair (Guro-dong 2nd Export Industrial Complex, September 9-October 20), Korea’s first international trade fair, is held. The poster was designed by Min Chulhong and Cho Youngjae.

    The Seventeenth National Art Exhibition (Gukjeon) (Gyeongbokgung Palace Museum, October 5-November 5) is held. For the first time in the history of the National Art Exhibition, a calligraphy work receives the Presidential Award, and Lee Seungjio’s Nucleus F90 geometric abstract painting receives the Minister Award. These incidents reveal changes to the National Art Exhibition. Lee Wansu receives the Prime Minister’s Prize for June, and Park Suk-won receives the National Assembly Speaker’s Prize for Scorched Earth. Additional Minister of Culture and Public Information Prizes are awarded to Lee Youngchan (Blue Filial Piety), Kim Haengshin (Study), Kang Chankyun (Stone Lantern), Kim Bonggeun (Poem by Kim Jongjik), and Han Ilseon (Cicada Catching).

    Kang Kukjin, Jung Kangja, and Chung Chanseung perform the happening Murder at the Han Riverside under the Second Han River Bridge(now Yanghwa Bridge), rebelling against authoritarian academic art and asserting the will of the avant-garde.

    The Korean Contemporary Printmakers Association [Hanguk hyeondae panhwaga hyeophoe] holds The First Korean Contemporary Prints Association Exhibition  (Shingegae Gallery, Seoul, October 20-24). The Association is an organization founded by Kang Whansup, Kim Minja, Kim Sangyu, Kim Choungza, Kim Chonghak, Kim Foon, Bae Yoong, Suh Seungwon, Yoo Kangyul, Youn Myeungro, Rhee Sangwooc, Chun Sungwoo, Choi Youngrim, and others, who left the Korea Prints Association [Hanguk panhwa hyeophoe].

    The Korean Craft Design Institute [Hanguk gongye dijain yeonguso], an incorporated association, is opened on the site of Seoul National University in Yeongeon-dong, Jongno-gu for the purposes of improving design, conducting research on production technology, cultivating craft technicians, and promoting the Korean craft industry.

    The Sixth International Biennial Exhibition of Prints in Tokyo (The National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo, November 2-December 15) is held. The exhibition features three Korean artists including Ahn Dong kuk, Bae Yoong and Suh Seungwon.

    The First Modern Space Club Exhibition (Sambo Gallery, Seoul, December 11-20) is held. The exhibition features eight artists including Ko Yeongsu, Nam Cheol, Oh Jong-uk, Lee Jeong-gap, Joo Haejoon, Choi Byeongsang, Choi Jongtae and Choi Chung-ung.
