    Following the government’s policy of liberalizing overseas travel, artists’ stays abroad and participation in international exhibitions expand.

    The art magazine Gyegan Misool, first launched in 1976, is relaunched  as Wolgan Misool.

    The Artists in Focus 1988 (Seoul Museum, February 1-28) is held. Selected are Bae Hyungkyung (sculpture), Kim Jiwon (painting), Lee Myoungbok (painting), Lim Youngsun (sculpture), Park Jaedong (cartoon), Park Moonjong (painting), Social Photo Research Group (collective creation), Son Kihwan (painting), and Women’s Art Research Association (collective creation). 
    The exhibition later develops into Trends and Prospects (1990, 1991).

    The Fifth Korean Young Artists Biennale (National Museum of Contemporary Art, Gwacheon (now MMCA), March 26-April 23) is held. The Steering committee members are Yu Jun-sang, Park Raegyeong, and Yun Uhak. A total of thirty-two artists participate, including An Chi-in, Cheon Gwangyeop, Cho Duckhyun, Cho Min, Choi Jeonghwa, Han Jiseon, Hong Seungil, Kim Jeonghui, Kim Kyujung, Kim Sookyung, Kim Sukwhan, Kim Sunhyung, Kwon Seokbong, Kwon Yeohyun, Lee Bul, Lee Doohan, Lee Igryo, Lee Jaesam, Lee Jeonggil, Lee Kyojun, Lee Sangseok, Noh Gyeongae, Park Hyeonseok, Park Sunok, Seong Seonok, Sohn Seo-ran, Yang Haeung, Yi Wonkon, Yook Keunbyung, Yoon Jinsup, and Yoon Youngseok.
    At the opening ceremony (March 25), Lee Bul roams the exhibition hall wearing a grotesque stuffed-doll costume, Lee Doohan grills fish or covers his body with plaster, An Chi-in scatters cards into the air, and Yoon Jinsup throws eggs, among other performances.

    The 220V (Noksaek Gallery, Seoul, March 30-April 13) is held. A total of four artists participate, including Kang Sangjung, Kim Hyeong-tae, Kim Jae-deok, and Song Ju-han. It is organized to explore the modes of expression and phenomena that emerge from the convergence of technology and art.

    The Research Society for Art Criticism [Misul bipyeong yeonguhoe] holds its founding ceremony at the Ilyang Building in Jongno-gu, Seoul. Composed of art critics, the association organizes regular research presentation meetings. Lee Youngwook serves as the representative, with Sung Wan-kyung, Shim Kwanghyun, Lee Youngjune, Lee Youngchul, and Cho Insoo as steering committee members.
    Active members include Bahc Mo, Beck Jee-sook, Choi Bum, Eom Hyeok, Kang Seongwon, Kim Jinsong, Kim Suki, Lee Youngchul, Lee Youngjune, Lee Youngwook, Lee Yunam, Oh Moosuk, Paik Hanul, Park Chan-kyong, Park Sinui, Shim Kwanghyun, and Sung Wan-kyung.
    Mibiyŏn played an active role studying art history, art institutions, policies, criticism, and popular culture, and remains active until July 1993.

    Kim Ki Seok, Joe Sung Yong, Kim In Cheurl: Notion of Madang  (TOTO Gallery Ma, Tokyo, May 8-June 17) is held. This is the first architectural exhibition jointly curated by Korea and Japan. 
    Architectural critic Miyake Riichi and Kkumim editor Kim Jeongdong select three emerging architects who write, Kim Ki Seok, Kim In Cheurl, and Joe Sung Yong. The related symposium “From Seoul 1989—Architectural Prospects in East Asia” (Tokyo Architectural Hall, May 9; Osaka Teijin Hall, May 12) features participation by Korean architects Kim Ki Seok, Kim In Cheurl, Kim Hyeondon, Choi Jaeeun, Joe Sung Yong together with Japanese architects.

    The Kumho Gallery opens in Insadong, Seoul. Its opening exhibition, The Figurative Arts of 1980s (May 10–July 4) is held. The exhibition is divided into four parts—Part 1 “Western Painting” (May 10–23), Part 2 “Korean Painting” (May 24–June 6), Part 3 “Sculpture” (June 7–20), and Part 4 “Prints” (June 21–July 4)—with a total of 112 artists participating.

    The Third Realite Seoul (Gallery Seomi, Seoul, June 16-25) is held. A total of twenty-four artists participate, including Kim Yong-Ik, Kim Woohan, Kim Chonghak, Kim Tschoonsu, Kim Taeho, Kwon Yeohyun, Noh Sangkyoon, Mun Beom, Park Hangryul, Bae Seokbin, Suh Yongsun, Shin Jangsik, Ahn Jungmin, Rhee Kibong, Yi Insoo, Jung Eunmi, Cho Duckhyun, Cho Myung-sik, Choi Gene-uk, Ha Dongchul, Han Unsung, Hyung Jinsik, Hong Seunghye, and Hwang Yongjin.

    Curated by Yoo Jaekil, The Light and Movement (COEX Contemporary Museum, Seoul, July 2-15) is held. A total of eleven artists participate, including Kang Sangjung, Kim Unbae, Gum Nuri, Park Hunsung, Suh Donghwa, Shin Mingyu, Shin Jinsik, Oh Inseok, Lee Kwangyeol, Lee Taehyun, and Ha Dongchul.

    Curated by Kang Hyungkoo and Shin Youngseong, Performance Art Festival Art and Action and Humans and Life and Thought and Communication (Now Gallery, Seoul, July 7-17) is held. A total of eighteen artists participate, including Kang Yongdae, Kim Jaegwon, Kim Joonsu, Nam Sunchu, Mun Jeong-gyu, Bang Hyo-seong, Sung Neungkyung, Shin Youngseong, Shim Hongjae, An Chi-in, Yoon Jinsup, Yook Keunbyung, Lee Kun-Yong, Lee Doohan, Lee Bul, Lee Ija, Lim Kyungsuk, and Jo Chung-yeon. 
    At the related symposium (July 16), Kim Jaegwon presents “Performance Art as a System of Thought”.

    The Fourth Present-Image (Gallery Hyundai, Seoul, July 11-19) is held. A total of thirty-three artists participate, including Kang Heeduk, Kwon Yeohyun, Kim Kangyong, Kim Youngwon, Kim Yongsik, Kim Woohan, Kim Yujun, Kim Inkyung, Kim Chonghak, Kim Chanil, Kim Taeho, Ryu In, Min Seongrae, Park Kwonsoo, Park Bouchan, Suh Yongsun, Yoon Sungchin, Lee Dooshik, Lee Sukju, Lee Seungha, Lee Yongdeok, Lee Jong-an, Lim Youngsun, Lim Chulsoon, Jeong Kyuseok, Cho Duckhyun, Cho Yonggak, Jo Chungrae, Ji Seokcheol, Choi Duckkyo, Choi Gene-uk, an Unsung, and Hwang Yongjin. 
    Seo Seong-rok presents the preface “Overcoming Old Modernism and Harsh Realism”. Subsequently, Lee Youngchul publishes “Between Modernism and Realism in the 1980s” in the September/October 1989 issue of Gana Art. In response, Shim Kwanghyun also responsible “The Neutral Ideology of Postmodernists” in November 1989, sparking the postmodernism debate.

    The Fourth Logos-Pathos (Kwanhoon Gallery, Seoul, July 19-25) is held. A total of thirty artists participate, including Kang Taisung, Kwon Seokbong, Kwon Yong-rae, Kim Misuk, Kim Aedeok, Kim Jonggu, Kim Tschoonsu, Noh Sangkyoon, Doh Heungrok, Mun Beom, Moon Joo, Park Jungwhan, Park Hangryul, Seo Hyosook, Won Injong, Yoo Younghwan, Yoon Rankyung, Yoon Youngseok, Rhee Kibong, Lee Sangbong, Yeesookyung, Lee Yonggyu, Yi Insoo, Jang Mungeol, Jung Sanggon, Jeong Eunmi, Jung Jaechul, Cho Myung-sik, Hyung Jinsik, and Hong Seunghye.

    The Cheonggye Chung Chong-yuo (Shinsegae Gallery, Seoul, July 20-August 6) is held. Around thirty works are presented. 
    This is the first solo exhibition of an artist who defected to North Korea, held after the 1988 lifting of the ban on North Korean–affiliated artists. Following this exhibition, research and exhibitions on such artists become more active.

  • August

    The Meta-Vox Disbanding: A Condition of 80s Art (Noksaek Gallery, Seoul, August 29-September 7) is held. A total of six artists participate, including Kim Chan-dong, An Won-chan, Oh Sang-Ghil, Jang Gi-beom, Ha Minsu, and Hong Seungil. As a related event, a public discussion and slide show by the group artists is held on September 3.

    The Third Women and Reality: Women, Seize the Lifeline of the Nation and Defend This Land! (Min Art Gallery [Geurim Madang Min], Seoul, September 22-28) is held. Participants include Kang Yeonyeong, Ko Seon-a, Koo Seonhwe, Kwon Seong-ju, Kim Giho, Kim Minkyung, Kim Jungheun, Kim Jong-rye, Kim Jiseon, Kim Youngmi, Kim Yongim, Kim Insoon, Kim Haekyung, Kim Hwanyeong, Namkung San, Dong Soshin, Park Geumsook, Park Sunmi, Park Yeongeun, You Younghee, Yun Suknam, Yun Hyejeong, Yi Inchul, Lee Jeonghui, Lee Chulsoo, Lee Hyewon, Seo Sukjin, Shin Gayoung, Jeon Sungsook, Jeong Sunhui, Jung Jungyeob, Ju Wan-su, Jo Kyoungsook, Jo Soyeong, Jo Hyeran, Josopae Heuk, Cho Hyeryeon, Choi Kyungsook, Choi Sujin, Choi Jeonghyun, and Choi Hun-sun.

    The Twentieth Sao Paulo Art Biennial (Ciccillo Matarazzo Pavilion, Brazil, October 14–December 10) is held. Yu Jun-sang serves as commissioner for the Korean artists and selects three participants including Suh Doho, Yook Keunbyung, and Yoon Youngseok.

    The Korea Performance Art Association organizes the First Korea–Japan Performance Festival (Dongsoong Art Center Small Theater, Seoul, October 26–30). A total of twenty participants take part, including twelve from Korea—Go Sangjun, Kim Saha, Kim Haemin, Mu Sejung, Mun Jeong-gyu, Park Changsoo, Shim Woosung, Shim Chuljong, Shim Hongjae, Lim Kyungsuk, Lee Bul, and Jo Chung-yeon. On October 28, Lee Bul premieres the performance Abortion.
