As part of the March First Independence Movement Day Commemorative Arts Festival hosted by the Korean Federation of Cultural Organizations [Jeonguk munhwa danche chongyeonhapoe], the Great Korean Art Association [Daehan misul hyeophoe] holds The March First Independence Movement Day Celebration Art Exhibition (Munchong hoegwan, Busan, March 1–7).
The Fourth Great Korean Art Association Exhibition (March First Commemorative Art Exhibition) (coffee houses in the Gwangbok-dong area of Jung-gu, Busan—Chilseong, Neulbom, Nalnim, Nogwon, Manghyang, and Geumjandi, March 1–7) is held.
A total of eighty-nine artists participate, including Ko Huidong, Kim Gyeongwon, Kim Youngki, Kim Eunho, Kim Ilcheong, Kim Junghyun, No Soohyeon, Park Nosoo, Park Saengkwang, Park Seungmoo, Park Wonsu, Park Inkyung, Bae Ryeom, Bae Jeongrye, Byeon Gwansik, Suh Seok, Sung Jaehyu, Sim Euntaek, Oh Ilyoung, Lee Sangbeom, Lee Yongwoo, Lee Yootae, Lee Ungno, Lee Hyunok, Jang Deok, Chang Woosoung, Chang Unsang, Chun Kyungja, Choi Wooseok, Heo Geon, Huh Baeklyun, Heo Jeongdu (Eastern Painting Division); Kang Sinseok, Gu Bonung, Kwon Okyon, Kim Nambye, Kim Won, Kim Eungjin, Kim Insoong, Kim Junghyun, Kim Chanhee, Kim Whanki, Kim Foon, Kim Sou, Kim Byungki, Na Hyegyun, Nam Kwan, To Sangbong, Ryu Kyungchai, Moon Shin, Park Kosuk, Park Deuksoon, Park Myeongseon, Park Sangok, Park Sungwhan, Park Youngsun, Paik Namsoon, Paek Youngsu, Seo Seongchan, Son Eungsung, Son Ilbong, Song Byungdon, Song Jeonghun, Song Hyaesoo, Shin Kumrye, Yang Dalsuk, U Sinchul, Yu Moyeol, Yu Youngpil, Yoon Jungsik, Lee Madong, Lee Byungkyu, Lee Bongsang, Lee Seduk, Lee Soo-auck, Lee Jechang, Lee Chongwoo, Lee Joon, Lee Jungseop, Lee Chesang, Lee Ho○, Lim Wangyu, Yim Ho, Chang Ucchin, Jeon Changbok, Chun Hyucklim, Chung Kyu, Han Mook, and Hwang Yeomsoo (Western Painting Division).
Among the works exhibited, fourteen are purchased by UNKRA, a United Nations agency supporting postwar reconstruction in Korea.The Fourth War Art Exhibition of the War Artists Corps in Commemoration of the March First Movement (Daedohoe Tea Garden, Busan, March 7–20) is held by the Information and Education Division of the Ministry of National Defense.
A total of twenty-five artists participate, including Kwon Youngwoo, Park Nosoo, Park Seweon, Suh Seok, Lee Yootae, Chang Woosoung, Chang Unsang (Eastern painting); Kwon Okyon, Kim Byungki, Kim Insoong, Kim Foon, Moon Shin, Park Kosuk, Park Sangok, Park Youngseun, Son Eungsung, Lee Bongsang, Lee Seduk, Lee Joon, Lee Jungseop, Chang Ucchin, Han Mook, and Hwang Yeomsoo (Western painting); and Kang Yong-rin and Kim Myonghi (Sculpture). -

The Third Naval War Artists Exhibition (Mihwadang Gallery, Busan, April 20–27) is held. A total of forty-two works are exhibited.

The First Hubangihoe(Second Half) Exhibition (Mihwadang Gallery, Busan, May 10–17) is held. Kwon Okyon, Kim Foon, Moon Shin, and Lee Joon exhibit a total of thirty-four works.
Hubangihoe (The Second Half Group) is a modernist art group formed in Busan in 1952, centered on artists in their thirties including Kim Whanki, Moon Shin, Lee Joon, and Han Mook. -

After Lim In-sik, who serves in the Korean War as the head of the Photography Corps of the Information and Education Division of the Ministry of National Defense, is discharged, he establishes the Korean Photo Service [Daehan sajin tongsinsa] in Seoul. Lim In-sik serves as the chief manager and managing editor, Park Jinsik serves as the chief editor, Mun Je-an as chief of reporting, and Jeong Doseon as chief of photography. The Korean Photo Service leaves behind a photographic archive documenting the war, postwar reconstruction, and political and social scenes, including aerial photographs of Seoul.
By decree of the Standing Committee of the Supreme People’s Assembly of North Korea, the title of Meritorious Artist is established. It is a state honorary title awarded to individuals who have rendered distinguished service in the arts, including directors, cinematographers, composers, and visual artists. In July 1961, the title of People’s Artist is established.

A total of fourteen artists participate, including Kim Byungki, Kim Jeong-gu, Mun Seonho, Sin Sukpil, Yoon Jungsik, Lee Dukchan, Lee Jungseop, Lee Ho-yeon, Chung Kyu, Ji Gyeong-deok, Jin Byeong-deok, Han Mook, Hwang Yeomsoo, and Hwang Yooyup.

Han Hongtaik’s Industrial Art Solo Exhibition (Seoul Olympia Tea Garden, Seoul, July 15–20) is held. Eleven works promoting industrial development and external propaganda are exhibited.

Yun Hyojoong participates in the International Conference of Artists in Venice (September 22–28) as a representative of the art world and a member of the UNESCO Korean delegation. On the recommendation of the Korean Federation of Cultural Organizations [Jeonguk munhwa danche chongyeonhapoe], novelist Kim Malbong, writer Kim Soun, architect Kim Chung-up, and filmmaker Oh Young-jin are selected to accompany the group. Kim Chung-up, who meets Le Corbusier, then serving as Vice-President of the International Conference of Artists, works at Atelier Le Corbusier in Paris until 1955.

Hosted by the North Korean branch of the Korean Federation of Cultural Organizations [Jeonguk munhwa danche chongyeonhapoe], The Exhibition of Works by Artists Who Emigrated to South Korea (International Club, Busan, November 15–21) is held. A total of fifteen artists participate, including Kang Yong-rin, Kim Hyungkoo, Nam Chang-nyeong, Mun Seonho, Sin Sukpil, Yu Seok-jun, Yoon Jungsik, Lee Jungseop, Chung Kyu, Jo Donghun, Choi Youngrim, Han Mook, Han Sang-don, Hwang Yeomsoo, and Hwang Yooyup, exhibiting thirty-three works. Kim Byungki, Yoon Jungsik, Lee Jungseop, Han Mook, and Bruno of the U.S. Embassy serve as judges. Kang Yong-rin is selected for the Minister of Education Award.

The First Exhibition of the Photo Artists Society of Korea (International Club, Busan, December 12–18) is held. A total of fifty-six works are submitted by thirty-seven participants.
The Photo Artists Society of Korea [Hanguk sajin jakga hyeophoe], founded in 1952, has Hyun Ilyeong serving as chairman and Limb Eungsik as vice-chairman, with a total of forty members, including Jo Myeongwon and Ji Buwon, participating. It is dissolved during the period of the military coup in 1961, when cultural organizations are merged or abolished. The present-day Photo Artists Society of Korea is originally the Korean Photo Association [Hanguk sajin hyeophoe], founded in 1961 with the participation of Lim In-sik and Jeong Doseon, which is renamed the Photo Artists Society of Korea in 1962.Park Kosuk, Son Eungsung, Lee Bongsang, Lee Jungseop, and Han Mook found Gijohoe and hold The First Gijohoe Exhibition (Renaissance Coffee House, Busan, December 22–28). A total of nineteen works are exhibited by five participating artists.
The First Exhibition of Works by War Artists Serving with the Air Force (USIS Center, Daegu) and The Fourth Naval War Artists Exhibition (Renaissance Coffee House, Busan, December 10–16) are held.
