Korean Young Artists’ Association [Hanguk misul cheongnyeon jakgahoe] was founded on January 20, 1974 by twenty painters and twenty-five sculptors, including the sculptor Chung Kwanmo. Its manifesto stated the group’s purpose of establishment, saying that “(the Korean Young Artists’ Association) is an open and communal platform where motivated young artists can freely participate and unite, and a scholarly gathering in which each [member] can explore his/her own oeuvre within the diversification of contemporary art and eagerly try to perfect it.” To fulfill its objective, the association held the Korean Young Artists’ Association Exhibition thirty-five times from 1974 through 1994. Expanding the geographic scope of its exhibitions, it also organized traveling exhibitions not just in Seoul and local regions but also overseas. Moreover, the association set up a youth center and hosted solo exhibitions for its members and invitational exhibitions for outside artists and local organizations there. In addition, it held a total of twenty-five seminars by inviting speakers including Kim Bokyoung, Kim Inwhan, Kim Sou, Park Chongbae, Oh Kwang-su, and Yoon Jinsup, and published its bulletin Cheongnyeon misul (Youth Art) eighteen times. Moreover, it engaged in various activities, including holding the Young Artist Grand Prize Exhibitions, which took the form of a contest jointly hosted with the Youth Art Museum from 1983. However, it was disbanded in 1994 due to the weakening of the solidarity among its members.
