An exhibition space established by the Samsung Foundation of Culture in 1999, PLATEAU is located on the first floor of the Samsung Life Insurance building in Sejongdae-ro, Jung-gu, Seoul. The predecessor of PLATEAU, Rodin Gallery, comprised a glass pavilion and contemporary art exhibition space in which Rodin’s The Gates of Hell and The Burghers of Calais are on display. The shift in focus to contemporary art in 2011 led Rodin Gallery to be renamed PLATEAU. PLATEAU, as per its name, is a space in which the artistic output of past masters as well as that of the future will be reinterpreted and subjected to experimental reinterpretation. The name also signifies the idea of the critical and intellectual heights that artists might seek to reach, and a place where all who love art can experience an uplifting artistic experience. PLATEAU has held solo and event exhibitions of Korean and overseas contemporary artists, and served an important role in contemporary Korean art. The exhibition space closed in 2016, when the Samsung Life Insurance building was sold.
